Sarah Palin on Travel – Katie Couric Interview transcript
Couric: In preparing for this conversation, a lot of our viewers … and Internet users wanted to know why you did not get a passport until last year. And they wondered if that indicated a lack of interest and curiosity in the world.
Palin: I’m not one of those who maybe came from a background of, you know, kids who perhaps graduate college and their parents give them a passport and give them a backpack and say go off and travel the world.
Noooooo, I’ve worked all my life. In fact, I usually had two jobs all my life until I had kids. I was not a part of, I guess, that culture. The way that I have understood the world is through education, through books, through mediums that have provided me a lot of perspective on the world.
Wow. That is the dumbest shit I have ever heard.
What is “one of those“?
Intelligent people? People well traveled? People that live life?
No Sarah Palin you are not “one of those”
And what is “that culture“?
The educated? People with culture? Non-rednecks?
No Sarah Palin you are not of “that culture”.
“The way that I have understood the world is through education, through books, through mediums that have provided me a lot of perspective on the world.”
Because we all know the best way to learn about something is to simply read about it. But come on, we all know she doesn’t read much.
And this coming from someone who “might have” tried to ban books.

Great post. Gettin more and more political by the day. Loving it. I’m sure most of your readers couldn’t give a fuck about this, but I do.
To answer your question of, “What is “one of those?”, let me explain. By one of those, Palin is referring to the aristocratic, prep school educated, condescending snobs, if you will, who thumb their noses at the “fly over people”.
By “that culture”, she is referring again, to the privileged, trust-fund babies who never had to work a day in their life. Donald Trump said it best by calling them the “lucky sperm club”. The ones who were given a bespoke suit when they graduated bottom of their class from a top-tier school. Yes, I’m aware this includes GWB, but look above.
She is perfectly aware that she won’t win any “those” votes, or yours for that matter, but will win the votes of John and Jane Middle America (and even the working class of the coastal regions as well). She’s One of them. One who has had to work her whole life to make ends meet and support her family. As someone who fancies yourself a businessman, I’m surprised you didn’t pick up on the advertising/marketing/PR angle there.
I would like to make it clear that I don’t think that Palin is a suitable VP candidate. I am, however, happy (and saddened) the see Republicans using the same pandering maneuvers the Democrats have for years.
And since we’re talking politics, I’m praying Bill Maher (and yourself) keep snubbing your noses at “them” and calling them trailer-trash, rednecks, fly-over people, etc. Great way to win over votes. This reminds of P. Diddy’s Vote or Die campaign in 2004. You know, the one where he didn’t support any specific nominee, but we could all read between the lines. It turns out that his campaign actually won Bush more votes than it did for Kerry. Look this up if you don’t believe me. I’d rather you didn’t though, so you and Bill Maher can keep winning McCain more votes.
Just for the record, I’m from the trust fund capital of the US: Northern New Jersey. I have never been to Iowa and have never ate a mooseburger, but I wouldn’t criticize someone for doing so. I’m what you would call “open minded”.
I’m very surprised you’re posting all of my comments. I thought as the media, you would block all right-of-center thought.

*cough* What Palin is implying is she’s not a spoilt brat. Unlike some people she wasn’t partying on Mommy’s and Daddy’s wallet.
I’m surprised nobody knew anyone at college who’s 40k + tuition, the de rigueur grand tour of Europe and partied their way thru school was done on Mommy and Daddy’s buck.
Yes, been there, done that except I paid for college.

Republican but doesn’t support W,
Yeah, its hard not to be a little political these days. Before I would just write about the political implications of Foie Gras or smoking. (which I do respect Republicans for fighting for our rights).
I got the point she was trying to make by saying, “one of those” and “that culture”. It was actually very transparent.
I was just taking shots at her idiotic view point that one needs to be rich to travel. All you really need is a little get up and go.
“It turns out that his campaign actually won Bush more votes than it did for Kerry.”
Agreed.
But I do have a problem with small minded people running our country and causing other counties to have a poor opinion of us.
Hell, my maid is more well traveled than she is.

MPM,
That’s all!?!?!?! Just “Agreed”? Come on man, I’ve been waiting the past few hours for your response and all I get is “agreed” from you? Pull those desert eagles out and take me down. I think you’re getting weak in your old age, kid. I hope you’re not conceding to me.
As far as her comments being “transparent”, I agree. I was just trying to elicit some emotion by describing them with detail.
And quit it with all the stories about your fucking suits and hip-hop shit. Write more about your lefty politics. The stories about the strippers and partying can stay, though.
I’m lighting a Marlboro just for you, my fellow Republican.

Republican but doesn’t support W,
I do agree that dissing people for being unsophisticated and unworldly makes those same people vote republican. That is the problem with our country, the vast majority of it is terrible.
How many good cities do we have? six? Hell, there is a least that many dope cities in Spain alone. Northern New Jersey? That place is a piss stop between DC and NYC.
“And quit it with all the stories about your fucking suits and hip-hop shit.”
Hip Hop and soul is the soundtrack of The G Manifesto. Just like the International Playboys of old liked Jazz and blues.
“The stories about the strippers and partying can stay, though.”
When you say “strippers”, you don’t mean “strippers” in a Republican sense where you are openly anti-gay, but secretly go to to strip clubs without girls, do you?

Republican but doesn’t support W,
I started working when I was 13, and I’m one of those northeastern liberal elites I believe she is referring to. I got my passport on my own, worked my way through college, saved up my own money and travel the world on my own dime, frequently taking a hit on my cashflow in exchange for the invaluable life experience of traveling. Is Bill Maher any worse in what he does than Sarah Palin was in this comment? Do you wonder why Bill Maher is thumbing his nose at these morons?
30/09/2008 at 2:34 pm Permalink
No trust fund,
Clearly, Palin was not referring to you when she responded to Couric’s questions. She was asked a question and responded with the best answer.
-“Is Bill Maher any worse in what he does than Sarah Palin was in this comment?”
Yes, he is worse due to the fact that HE is one criticizing the midwesterners first. Could it possibly be that she was indirectly responding BACK to the liberal’s jabs at the “country folk” who are constantly being labeled as fly-over people, trailer-trash, etc. It’s like which came first, the chicken or the egg? It’s pretty obvious the answer to that one. I don’t really hear of too many midwesterners criticizing the coastal people, but I do hear quite a bit of the opposite. If you would like an example, just scroll your mouse wheel above and watch Maher’s piece on the G Manifesto.
I work with quite a few midwest transplants who just don’t understand why the northeast look at them with such disgust. They are very educated people who go to work everyday and do their job.
On second thought, I should never of wrote my first piece. Keep pushing the press to rip on the midwest, we need them to vote Republican. VOTE OR DIE!

Hilarious! Kepp em coming!
-When you say “strippers”, you don’t mean “strippers” in a Republican sense where you are openly anti-gay, but secretly go to to strip clubs without girls, do you?
No, I do mean the same kind that you go to. The kind with big titties and asses.
-Northern New Jersey? That place is a piss stop between DC and NYC.
Thanks. Unfortunately, I agree. You gotta admit though, that the girls around are pretty hot. Pretentious, but hot.
30/09/2008 at 3:06 pm Permalink
And I’m not anti-gay. I’m not judging you, am I, MPM?
30/09/2008 at 3:11 pm Permalink
-How many good cities do we have? six? Hell, there is a least that many dope cities in Spain alone.
I guess you’re talking about NYC, LA, DC, Miami, Vegas, and New Orleans.
You forgot Anchorage, Wichita, Cincinnati and Kalamazoo. Those places put Sound Factory NYC to shame.

Republican but doesn’t support W, she was definitely talking about me. I live in Manhattan, I frequently drink espresso drinks, and prefer European cars. Maybe if those midwesterners want to be taken seriously, they should stop voting people like Bush into power.
And quit eating so fucking much, it’s killing my health insurance premiums.

No trust fund, Frank, Anon,
Sorry for telling like it is. I know, the truth hurts.
No Trust Fund- As for Palin “definitely talking about me”. Again, she clearly was NOT. She said, “I’m not one of those who maybe came from a background of, you know, kids who perhaps graduate college and their parents give them a passport and give them a backpack and say go off and travel the world.”
You said through your own admission, “I got my passport on my OWN, worked my way through college, saved up my OWN money and travel the world on my OWN dime, frequently taking a hit on my cashflow in exchange for the invaluable life experience of traveling.”
(Holding a megaphone) THIS WOULD MEAN SHE IS NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU IF YOU PAID YOUR OWN WAY!!!
She never said a word about Starbucks or BMWs.
Lastly, I didn’t get the comment about eating too much. I read through my comments and didn’t write anything about eating.

One side of the American dream is to work hard and earn enough money so you can send your kids to college and then maybe even let them see the world a little before they dive into their own adult lives. The idea is to give your kids a life that is BETTER than the one you had. We Americans need to knock off the class-warfare B.S. that makes us sneer at our fellow Americans who have accomplished this. And it’s important that we not hate these kids or assume they have no moral values or worth, just because they come from wealth.
The other side of the American dream is, well, we don’t all succeed at this and to each his (or her) own. If Sarah Palin wasn’t all that curious about seeing the world first-hand, that’s her prerogative. But today’s world is a huge and increasingly complex place brimming with ideas and approaches to solving all the problems we create as we go. For that reason I think a curiousity with the world is a not an insignificant qualifier for service in public office at the national level.
Unsupportive Republican – You wrote “I don’t really hear of too many midwesterners criticizing the coastal people.” I disagree. I think this is essentially the criticism of the “elite” that McCain et al have latched onto for the past few weeks. It’s populism run amok, as detailed in a great article here:

Republican but doesn’t support W: Hangs around in Northern New Jersey, banging loud, obnoxious bitches with hoop earrings, chewing gum, too much lipliner and nothing of value to say. Picks them up in shitty sports bars. Trudges back in to work every Monday morning, wondering if there’s more to life. Vacations in Cancun two weeks a year. Picks fights on the internet.
No trust fund: Hangs around in NYC, banging artsy college chicks, foreign girls with accents, intelligent women, women with ambition and something to say. Meets them in cutting edge nightspots. Leaves for random foreign destinations at the drop of a hat. Monday mornings are no different than Saturday mornings. Vacations whenever a break in the action allows it, and definitely more than two lousy weeks a year.
Knows there is more to life, and is living it.
TKO?
