Prop. K in San Francisco calls for legal prostitution

Proposition K would effectively decriminalize prostitution in the city by barring the Police Department from investigating and prosecuting it. The measure is being alternately hailed as a human rights landmark or a misguided venture that will turn San Francisco into a playground for sex tourists and pimps.

Proposition K

What it does: Would decriminalize prostitution in San Francisco, deny funds for the First Offender Prostitution Program commonly known as “john school,” and forbid the city from using state or federal funds that involve racial profiling to identify human trafficking victims.

Supporters: Erotic Service Providers Union, San Francisco Democratic Party, Harvey Milk Democratic Club, La Raza Centro Legal.

Argument in support: Will improve safety for sex workers, reduce sexually transmitted diseases and save the city millions of dollars spent annually on prosecuting prostitution while still requiring enforcement of laws against sexual assault, coercion and other crimes.

Opponents: Mayor Gavin Newsom, District Attorney Kamala Harris, Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club

I don’t really understand these kind “Props” that well, but if it really Legalizes Prostitution and protects the girls, then I am all for it.

Think of how dope San Francisco will be. We will be mixing up some serious Cioppino. Either way I am headed there early November.

Come on Gavin!

Police in Milan are investigating an unusual $1m (£628,420) robbery in the heart of the Italian fashion capital.

It was, said the victim, “a masterpiece of its kind”. It was certainly daring – in broad daylight and on one of Milan’s swankiest shopping streets.

Staff at Pederzani’s, one of the city’s exclusive jewellers, thought nothing amiss when a window cleaner went to work on the plate glass display.

Dressed in regulation overalls, he propped his ladder against the window.

But then, instead of using the bucket and squeegee to clean it, he calmly unscrewed it before scooping an estimated $1m-worth of jewels into his bucket and walking off into the Friday shopping crowd.

This is not the first audacious crime to hit Milan’s fashion district this year.

In February robbers tunneled their way into another top jeweler’s – escaping with almost $24m-worth of gems while its owners were away entertaining Hollywood stars at the Oscars.

Eduardo Arellano Felix arrested in Tijuana

Eduardo Arellano Felix arrested in Tijuana

Mexican law enforcement agents have captured Eduardo Arellano Felix, a suspected leader of the brutal, Baja California-based drug cartel responsible for smuggling large amounts of cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine to the United States.

The DEA also confirmed Arellano’s, nicknamed El Doctor, detention. It is the latest in a series of arrests in recent years that has weakened the organization. As the cartel has lost its grip on the lucrative drug-smuggling routes into the United States, a deadly battle for control of the Tijuana region has ensued.

Eduardo Arellano’s arrest follows that of his three brothers, Benjamin, Francisco Rafael and Francisco Javier, and the death of a fourth, Ramon, who was killed in a 2002 shootout with Mexican police in the state of Sinaloa.

A nephew, Fernando Sanchez Arellano, has been said to be in charge of the group’s day-to-day operations. But Sanchez has been challenged by a former crew leader, Eduardo Garcia Simental, known as El Teo, and their battle has claimed the lives of close to 150 people in Tijuana in the past month.

‘Not an icon, just a con’: Dinnertime bandit gets 15-year stretch

‘Not an icon, just a con’: Dinnertime bandit gets 15-year stretch

Alan Golder, convicted of two Greenwich burglaries as the so-called “Dinnertime Bandit,” was sentenced to 15 years in prison in state Superior Court in Stamford on Friday.

Golder was found guilty in August on four charges stemming from two Greenwich burglaries occurring in 1997, one on Sept. 25 on Woodside Road and another on Oct. 28 at a Round Hill Road residence. On Friday he received 10 years for each count of burglary, 12 years for a larceny conviction and 15 years for kidnapping. The sentences are to run concurrently.

After his release, Golder must serve 10 years of special parole, according to the sentence handed down by Judge John Kavanewsky.

In a statement to the court prior to sentencing, Golder told the judge he was confused as to the charges he was convicted on and blamed the outcome of the case on the legal work of his attorney, Howard Ehring.

“I believe Howard Ehring sold me out,” said Golder. “I think the jury was confused when they found me guilty.”

“Mr. Golder, you may have some grandiose illusions that you are an icon in the industry,” Kavenewsky said to Golder. “But put simply, you are a convict.”

Jewelry thief sentenced to 1 year in jail after 20 years on the lam

An international jewel thief will serve a year in Westchester County jail for swiping thousands of dollars in diamonds from a Yorktown jeweler nearly 20 years ago.

Moshe Tsitsaushivili, a 41-year-old from the republic of Georgia, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny yesterday in connection to the 1989 theft.

He was accused of stealing $30,000 to $35,000 in diamonds from the Yorktown jewelry business, but prosecutors charged him with second-degree grand larceny, which is for stolen goods worth more than $50,000.

He also is wanted in jewelry thefts in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio, but the biggest yet may be a $1.5 million jewel heist out of New South Wales from 1997 – one of the largest diamond heists in the history of Sydney, Australia.
