Scores of college presidents, including the head of Maryland’s public university system and the president of Johns Hopkins University, have an unexpected request for legislators: Please, lower the drinking age.
The Amethyst Initiative, launched in July, is a coalition of college presidents who say that the legal drinking age of 21 encourages binge drinking on campuses. William Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland, William Brody, president of Johns Hopkins, C.D. Mote Jr. of the University of Maryland and the presidents of Washington and Lee, Sweet Briar, Towson, Randolph-Macon, Duke, Tufts, Dartmouth and others have signed on to the effort.
It is likely to be difficult politically to change the drinking age, which has been 21 since the mid-1980s.
Not surprisingly, America’s richest state, Maryland, is also the most forward thinking.

De Beers has boosted rough diamond prices by 16 percent so far this year due to strong demand, the firm said on Tuesday.
De Beers, 45 percent owned by mining group Anglo American, said in July it was cautious about developments in the second half due to a downturn in the United States, the top diamond jewelery market.
Last month, De Beers said a difficult retail market in the United States, which accounts for around half of all diamond jewelery sales, was dampening sales of cheaper, mass market items using lower quality gems.
Anglo American has been a great stock play since I started following it back in 2004. But it seems like the Down Economy might even soften the Diamond Trade. I still think it will hold strong since every girl in middle America still wants a rock for her wedding.

Bank robbery suspect cited economy in botched heist
A Burlingame bank robbery suspect who crashed his car and scattered money on Interstate 880 in Hayward had taken $38,000 and told police that he committed the holdup because of the economy.
The suspect jumped on the counter, flashed a .38-caliber chrome revolver and ordered the seven people in the bank to the ground. Classic “take-over” bank robbery, as opposed to a “note job”.
When police tried to pull the car over, the suspect sped off and crashed as he attempted to enter the freeway going north. Poor get-away driving. The driver tried to run away, but pursuing officers shocked him with a Taser and arrested him.
I said in Outlook for 2008 to expect to “see more high-dollar International heists in 2008”. The Down Economy will also bring out more amateurs on low-dollar heists as well.
