Huge diamond could be a Record Breaker

A diamond unearthed in the southern African nation of Lesotho could yield one of the largest and highest quality round polished diamonds.

Experts in Antwerp, Belgium who analyzed the 478-carat stone determined it to be of the highest color grading available for a white diamond.

“What makes it more remarkable is the color and quality of this stone,” said diamond consultant Neil Buxton.

The diamond is a D color, which is the highest possible graded color you can get, and there is a chance of getting a 100-carat plus round stone with the highest color and clarity rankings.

The diamond, which was found in September, ranks as the 20th largest rough diamond ever found, but is not the biggest ever taken from the Letseng Mine, which is co-owned by Gem Diamonds Ltd. and the Kingdom of Lesotho, a country of 2.1 million that is surrounded by South Africa.

Two bigger stones — 603 and 493 carats — were found in the mine in 2006 and 2007, respectively, the company said. A 601-carat diamond was mined there in 1960.

The biggest diamond ever found so far is called the Cullinan diamond – which is part of the British Crown Jewels – and is measured at more than a staggering 3,100 carats.

We have already covered The Top Ten ways to Make Money in a Down Economy. Here is another way:

Exotic Dancer Garage Sale

If you are anything like me, and swoop Exotic Dancers every week, you will have mad stuff at your crib that Exotic Dancers have left behind. Things like watches, rings, earrings, Diamonds, Emeralds, Ruby, Sapphires, glasses, drugs, shoes, dresses, costumes etc. (And I don’t mean the Exotic Dancers named Diamond, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire from the Spearmint Rhino in Las Vegas, real names, Cindy, Mindy, Ruby and Jenny, either.)

Hell even if you have applied 10% of the crap I have written in this blog, you will have black plastic bags full of stuff that Exotics have left behind.

So anyways, if you need some scratch in a Down Economy, sell the stuff. Sell it to other Exotics at a discount, hell, its 100% profit.

Can’t beat that these days, even in the Bean Game.

Blood Diamond prices up 16 pct in 2008

Blood Diamond prices up 16 pct in 2008

De Beers has boosted rough diamond prices by 16 percent so far this year due to strong demand, the firm said on Tuesday.

De Beers, 45 percent owned by mining group Anglo American, said in July it was cautious about developments in the second half due to a downturn in the United States, the top diamond jewelery market.

Last month, De Beers said a difficult retail market in the United States, which accounts for around half of all diamond jewelery sales, was dampening sales of cheaper, mass market items using lower quality gems.

Anglo American has been a great stock play since I started following it back in 2004. But it seems like the Down Economy might even soften the Diamond Trade. I still think it will hold strong since every girl in middle America still wants a rock for her wedding.

72-Carat Diamond does not move at Hong Kong Auction

72-Carat Diamond does not move at Hong Kong Auction

A 72-carat flawless diamond, the star lot of Sotheby’s jewelry auction in Hong Kong with a pre-sale high estimate of HK$100 million ($12.8 million), was yanked of the block after the final bid failed to meet the reserve price.

Bidding for the D-colored pear-shaped diamond (and I don’t mean that fly Spearmint Rhino girl I know named Diamond, real name Cindy, either), the largest of its type to appear at Asian auctions, was supposedly disrupted by buyer confusion over foreign-exchange conversion for the gem. Potential buyers had called in from all over the world and bid for the gem in Hong Kong dollars. The mix-up might have led to the gem’s failure to move.

Personally, I think this shows the weakness in the world’s economy even at the highest levels. Good news for heistmen, weak economy = less money for security.

A D diamond is sometimes called “ice” for its top ranking on a scale that measures colorlessness. Ice is also what Hawaiians call Crystal Meth. Ice was also a sub-par nightclub, now defunct, in Las Vegas.

Rare Blue Diamond Breaks Auction Record

» 10 October 2007 » In diamonds, Guide, money » 5 Comments

Rare Blue Diamond Breaks Auction Record

The flawless 6.04 carat Blue Diamon was sold today for $7.98 million (or £3.91 million, the dollar is so weak right now. It can really hurt when you need to pick up some custom suits…Savile Row), the highest ever paid for a rare gemstone at auction per carat. It was expected to go for $6 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong.

My contacts tell me the bidding was pretty intense, as the Blue Diamond attracted potential heavyweight buyers from around the world. Blue Diamonds really only come from the Premier Mine in South Africa where the chances of finding one is a longshot, to say the least. Another famous Blue Diamond is the Hope Diamond (the largest in the world, at 45.52 carats) which now resides in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. (were I have spent many an afternoon casing it).

The “Hancock Red” diamond, which fetched $926,000 (£456,000) per carat in New York in April 1987.

The Blue Diamond was bought by Moussaieff Jewellers and will be locked a vault in Mayfair. I have been meaning to go to London soon, anyway, this just gives me another reason.
