These are the common stereotypes associated with the term ‘pothead’. In a recent piece we published on pot farms, a debate erupted in the comments section, with some arguing that if you smoke pot, you’ll be poor, gay, and “washing dishes until you’re dead.”

Where these stereotypes originated remains a mystery to us. In reality, they couldn’t be further from the truth. Not only have 42% of Americans admitted to trying pot, but pot smokers have gone on to become some of the most successful people in our society. We’re not talking about Willie Nelson and Snoop. These guys are on the Forbes 500, they’re leading the free world, and they prove that all existing pothead stereotypes are nothing more than myths.

Sir Richard Branson

While the ‘Sir’ in front of this guy’s name puts him in some very elite company, it doesn’t automatically get him on this list. What does earn him a spot is the fact that he’s the 236th richest person in the world, founder of the Virgin empire, which encompasses everything from airlines to record stores to cell phones, and made his entire multi-billion dollar fortune from absolutely nothing. Not only does this man smoke weed, he gets high with his 21-year-old son. He has publicly stated that there’s nothing wrong with smoking pot, has petitioned for the legalization of pot, and even said that if it were legal, he’d sell it.

Rick Steves

Your name doesn’t become synonymous with ‘European Travel’ by accident. You can’t just take a bong hit, lay back in your bean bag and toss off a few ‘graphs on how awesome the Louvre is. And yet here’s Rick Steves, author of 27 top selling European travel guides, host of his own TV show and radio show, and a very outspoken pothead. He’s a member of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, and credits pot for turning him into a better travel writer by opening his mind to new things.

Aaron Sorkin

In fairness to tokers around the world, Sorkin is a bit more of a ‘drug addict’ than he is ‘pothead’. He started dabbling with weed and coke back in the late ’80s, has been in and out of rehab numerous times, and was arrested for possession of marijuana, mushrooms and crack in 2001. So yeah, he loves to smoke weed… but he also loves to freebase. Not cool, Aaron! However, the man’s drug problems have done little to hinder his success in Hollywood. His work on The West Wing, both as writer and producer, earned him multiple Emmy Awards, and countless nominations for other awards.

Barack Obama

Almost every American President before Barry, from Washington to Clinton to Bush, has had a pot addled past. Clinton purportedly tried and failed to smoke a joint, Bush was a boozer, but messed with coke and pot from time to time, Washington even grew marijuana on his farm. But as far as we know, none have admitted to smoking as much pot as Obama. He wrote extensively about his stoner past in his book Dreams of My Father, and in a 2007 interview stated “When I was a kid I inhaled frequently. That was the point.” Anyone who wonders what kind of future a pothead can have should take a hard look at Barack Obama. Not only can you grow up to be ridiculously smart, you can grow up to be President.

Cool “Disco” Dan Washington D.C. Legend, Interview

Cool “Disco” Dan Washington D.C. Legend, Interview that I donated to the While You Were Sleeping bedtime Stories video. I shot this interview in 1996 or 1997 down on F Street where Dan sat and sold Go Go tapes. If you don’t know what go go is, he describes it in the video as “urban tribal music”. Dan himself is a D.C. urban legend. Everyone here knows of him, the washington post wrote articles on him and the djs on the radio used to make “your mom has been around the blcok so many times” jokes that used cool “disco” dan as their punchline. I shot this in super 8 film whichmakes it even cooler.

The eighties were a peculiar time in the history of the nation’s capital. Even before Mayor Marion Barry was caught on camera smoking crack, D.C. had acquired a nasty reputation as the most dysfunctional city in America. “The United States’ political headquarters is fast becoming the murder capital of the U.S., with more than one killing per day,” London’s Daily Telegraph told readers in 1989, “It is infested with drugs the streets are patrolled by an army of beggars the city is corrupt, inefficient and extremely dangerous.”

The D.C. of newspapers, however, was not always a version that residents recognized. In their new film, urban culture expert Roger Gastman and music video director Joseph Pattisall take on the loaded questions of how bad the nation’s capital really was and why. Blending exclusive interviews and archival footage, these Washington natives aim to offer the most comprehensive portrait to date on this critical decade. The development of Go-Go, D.C.’s distinctive style of urban music, racial tensions, sensationalist media, crack and corruption, will all be important pieces of this story.

George W. Bush Presidential Pardons 14

George W. Bush Presidential Pardons 14

(and commutes 2 prison sentences)

President George W. Bush has granted pardons to 14 individuals and commuted the prison sentences of two others convicted of misdeeds ranging from drug offenses to tax evasion, from wildlife violations to bank embezzlement, The Associated Press learned Monday.

Including these actions, he has granted a total of 171 and eight commutations. That’s less than half as many as Presidents Clinton or Reagan issued during their time in office. Both were two-term presidents.

On the latest pardon list were:

Leslie Owen Collier of Charleston, Mo. She was convicted for unauthorized use of a pesticide and violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

Milton Kirk Cordes of Rapid City, S.D. Cordes was convicted of conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act, which prohibits importation into the country of wildlife taken in violation of conservation laws.

Richard Micheal Culpepper of Mahomet, Ill., who was convicted of making false statements to the federal government.

Brenda Jean Dolenz-Helmer of Fort Worth, Texas, for reporting or helping cover up a crime.

Andrew Foster Harley of Falls Church, Va. Harley was convicted of wrongful use and distribution of marijuana and cocaine.

Obie Gene Helton of Rossville, Ga., whose offense was unauthorized acquisition of food stamps.

Carey C. Hice Sr. of Travelers Rest, S.C., who was convicted of income tax evasion.

Geneva Yvonne Hogg of Jacksonville, Fla., convicted of bank embezzlement.

William Hoyle McCright Jr. of Midland, Texas, who was sentenced for making false entries, books, reports or statements to a bank.

Paul Julian McCurdy of Sulphur, Okla., who was sentenced for misapplication of bank funds.

Robert Earl Mohon Jr. of Grant, Ala., who was convicted of conspiracy to distribute marijuana.

Ronald Alan Mohrhoff of Los Angeles, who was convicted for unlawful use of a telephone in a narcotics felony.

Daniel Figh Pue III of Conroe, Texas, convicted of illegal treatment, storage and disposal of a hazardous waste without a permit.

Orion Lynn Vick of White Hall, Ark., who was convicted of aiding and abetting the theft of government property.

Bush also commuted the prison sentences of John Edward Forte of North Brunswick, N.J., and James Russell Harris of Detroit, Mich. Both were convicted of cocaine offenses.

This is always my favorite part of every Presidential term.

I remember President Bill Clinton granted pardons to 456 people, including my personal favorite Marc Rich.

Keep in mind, Clinton was a two term President.

Ashley Alexandra Dupré 2008’s Woman of The Year?

» 18 November 2008 » In Girls, People » 1 Comment

Ashley Alexandra Dupré 2008’s Woman of The Year?

My friend just sent me this article:

The Lady at the center of the salacious scandal that brought down former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and generated national headlines is going to dish on her life as a pricey escort. ABC says Ashley Alexandra Dupre sat down with Diane Sawyer on the program “20/20.”

Dupre reveals how an “upper middle-class, girl next door got into the profession and the psychological journey she continues to experience.”

Spitzer resigned March 12 after it was disclosed he had used Emperors Club VIP. Dupre worked for the escort service.

On Thursday, federal prosecutors said they wouldn’t bring criminal charges against Spitzer, marking the end of the saga.

Four people pleaded guilty to running the prostitution operation.

The show will air Friday at 10 p.m.

I was just talking about this girl and Spitzer the other day. We were talking about how amazing it is that Ashley Alexandra Dupré has not said one word to the press since Eliot Spitzer went down. Especially in this day of media whores (so to speak).

Because of her show of class of keeping her mouth shut (and the fact that it is so incredibly rare for a young lady these days to avoid media exposure), I was thinking of naming her the first G Manifesto’s Woman of the Year at the annual G Manifesto Awards. (Click here for The G Manifesto Awards, The Best of 2007).

But now her chances look bleak.

And I don’t mean Memphis Bleek either.
